About

Henry Newquist is a jazz trombonist and composer,  originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Trombone Performance at the Oberlin Conservatory, where he studies with renowned trombonist and composer Jay Ashby. At Oberlin, Henry has also worked closely with esteemed faculty including Gerald Cannon, Chris Anderson, Dan Wall, Chris Coles, and Bobby Ferrazza.

Rooted in a deep passion for jazz and improvisation, Henry spent five years studying trombone with Spencer Sussman and two years studying jazz piano and theory with Joe Simiele. His musical education began early, and he quickly became a fixture in the Bay Area jazz scene, performing with the East Bay Jazz High School All-Stars for four consecutive years, two of them as lead trombonist.

Henry is an active performer, bandleader, and collaborator. He currently plays in the Oberlin Jazz Ensemble, where he has shared the stage with Grammy Award-winning artists such as Steve Davis, Andre Hayward, Jake Silverman, and Jay Ashby. He co-leads Bluescreen, a project focused on original compositions and live performances throughout Northern California. He is also a member of The Late Shift, a genre-fluid ensemble performing jazz, funk, pop, and soul across the East Coast and Midwest.

Beyond performance, Henry is committed to music education. He has taught jazz and trombone to middle and high school students through outreach programs and as a summer camp counselor at La Honda Music Camp, mentoring over 30 students through daily lessons, ensemble work, and improvisation sessions.
